AMARAVATI: TDP Politburo Member Varla Ramaiah on Thursday slammed the YCP Government for ‘deceiving and cheating’ Dalit communities by raising false hopes on developing a 125-ft Ambedkar statue and Smriti Vanam in the historic Swaraj Maidan PWD Ground located in the heart of Vijayawada City.
Ramaiah said CM Jaganmohan Reddy remotely laid the foundation stone for such a prestigious project even though he was just a few minutes drive away from the venue. The CM did not care to spend a single minute for Smriti Vanam while he travelled hundreds of kilometres and stayed for hours together at YSR Memorial at Idupulapaya.
Addressing a press conference here, the TDP senior leader asserted that the manner in which the CM pressed button for PWD grounds project insulted the memory of a world renowned intellectual like Dr Ambedkar and also his Dalit admirers and followers. It also showed that Mr. Jagan Reddy had no real intention to develop Smriti Vanam at PWD Grounds as this land was now under the seizure of the court. The court seized it following a case filed by the Pulichintala contractors for non-payment of bills towards completed works running into crores of rupees.
Ramaiah said that the Government promised to allot 20 acres in PWD Grounds for Smriti Vanam but actually there was only 13 acres open ground as of now. The remaining lands had concrete structures of the Krishna Polytechnic, Rythu Bazar, irrigation, electricity offices and the judges quarters. Neither the Chief Minister nor the Ministers concerned did any homework before announcing 20 acres for this project. All this showed that the CM hurriedly announced this project only to please Dalit votebanks in the face of rising anti-Jagan Reddy feelings among the weaker sections following harassment of Dr Sudhakar, Dr. Anitha Rani, ex MP Harsha Kumar, activist Rajesh and others.
Ramaiah said if Jagan Reddy was sincere, he should have allocated more funds to complete Ambedkar Smriti Vanam in Amaravati for which already Rs. 30 Cr was spent as against Rs. 97 Cr allocated by the Chandrababu Government. The Dalits were also educated and politically conscious these days but Jagan was under a delusion that he could deceive and use them as votebanks. The YCP Government should publish a white paper on how it can reclaim all 20 acres land at PWD Grounds and resolve legal aspects for Smriti Vanam.
The TDP leader also told the CM that PWD Grounds was more known as Swaraj Maidan which had a long history of witnessing public meetings addressed by Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and others. The CM would have taken opinion of different sections of people in the city before taking the decision.
