Nutrition during Monsoon

As the Monsoon season is fully in motion and on other side COVID is wrecking havoc across the nation.  Both are bringing various health challenges to the people and can be countered by strengthening ourselves.  In order to do it, experts advise us to plan our food intake that enhances strength and immunity and also reduces various effects of monsoon on our body.

It is understood that Monsoon season impacts human immune system, one need to be extra careful about what to eat and drink during the season.  The lower the immune system, it leads to getting affected with various common diseases, fevers that find their way into our bodies, thus making us more susceptible to COVID.

Keeping this in mind and in order to boost immunity, it is advised to eat seasonal hydrating fruits which have ascorbic acid or Vitamin C.  Further it is advised to eat fresh fruits like Papaya, Peaches, Pears, Plums and Bananas to build up one’s stamina.  Usage of garlic is encouraged by adding the same in curries that will also help immune system.  It is also advised to consume methi or fenugreek leaves, bitter gourd, need and turmeric as these Bitter items will help us in fighting infections.  .

In order to avoid bad bacteria entering stomach directly it is also advised to prefer CURD or yoghurt than milk. Further hot green tea or ginger tea added with lemon and honey contains rich source of antioxidants and is great for combating infections in rainy season.

It is advised to avoid watermelon and musk melon like fruits during the season.  These fruits along with buttermilk, lassi etc will cause swelling in the body hence one need to reduce the intake of these food items.  It is also advised to lower down the salt intake as it causes water retention and high blood pressure which may cause additional problems in the rainy season.   One also needs to avoid sour food like tamarind, tomatoes as they promote water retention.  Excessive intake of coffee and tea dehydrates body fluids so they must be better avoided.

Further it is also observed that during the monsoon contamination of water leads to various water borne diseases.  This will further create several other problems It is suggested that only boiled or purified water should be used especially to avoid intake of contaminated water directly.  While boiling the water, one can add ginger, tulsi and medicines spices like turmeric, cloves, pepper, cinnamon and cardamom etc thus helping us to fight COVID like infections.    It is also important to include anti inflammatory foods that help human’s body to fight oxidative decay.

In order to help further one must increase the intake of fiber and protein that helps us to strengthen the body. Radish juice will help us to fight cold and cough during monsoon.  It is also advised to avoid fried items; pre cut fruits and juices especially street food during monsoon that may pose the risks of hygiene and quality.

As monsoon increases the chances of falling sick due to various seasons, is advised to take the above advised foods and drinks to keeps the person fit and healthy thus warding off infection, gastro intestinal diseases, thyroid and other health issues.
