Hyderabad, Aug 8: Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan said on Saturday that sustainable agriculture is the key for ensuring food security in our country.
She said that for a country with a massive billion plus population, sustainable agricultural practices were very important to ensure continued food security and avoid hunger.
The Governor was participating as the chief guest and presented the “Dr Swaminathan Award for Environmental Protection” to eminent scientist and activist Dr. R S Paroda through a virtual conference organised by the Rotary Club of Madras East.
Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan emphasised that environment protection is the need of the hour, as we are witnessing the negative consequences of the degradation of environment through our over exploitation.
The Governor stated that she strongly believes in the simple of idea that is ‘if we protect the nature, the nature will protect us’ and added that Indian traditions, culture, practices and beliefs all highlight the protection of nature.
Referring to the contribution of Dr. Swaminathan, who is respected as the Father of Green Revolution in India, she said that he had saved India and many other countries from the possible starvation.

WHO chief scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, who was present in the meeting, exhorted the individuals, communities, and the governments to seriously reflect upon as to what we were doing to the nature and as a result how we are facing pandemics like the present Covid-19.
“We must desist from over exploitation of natural resources and avoid degradation of forests that are letting the viruses affect humans. It is time that we save our environment, save glaciers, and nature so as to prevent many more possible natural calamities and pandemics,” she added.
Later, the Governor presented the “Dr. Swaminathan Award for Environmental Protection” to eminent scientist Dr. R S Paroda in recognition of his invaluable services to sustainable agriculture and for his efforts in the protection of environment.
