The Nizam of Hyderabad’s role in the electrification of the Holy Cities is well known. What is less known are the contributions of the Hyderabadi public and individuals. Dr. Khwaja Moinuddin was the Salar of the Hyderabadi caravan in 1920s and stayed in the city for several years. In those days there was a non-governmental Nahr e Zarqa Committtee which was in charge of water supply to Madina Al Munawarra. Dr. Moinuddin was its key member and raised several thousand rupees each year for its upkeep. He was the first to install a pump at the canal and connected taps throughout the city. The Hyderabadis each year also paid for the کناس (sweepers), بواب( gatekeepers), and other staff of Masjid Nabawi. Residents of Madina had fond memories of Dr. Khwaja Moinuddin.
