The Hussain Sagar lake was excavated under the direction of Hussain Shah Wali, architect, engineer, planner etc during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Qutb Shah (1550-1580).

The Hussain Sagar Lake excavation works took more than three years to complete at the cost of Rs 254000(Two lakhs fifty four thousand ) between the years 1559-1562.
The excavation of the Hussain Sagar Lake was taken up as a welfare measure – In fact it should be treated as one of the WORLD FIRST FOOD FOR WORK PROGRAMME as there were frequent famines and droughts during that period.
